This blog is about widgets? Seriously? Yes, among other things! For the busy firefighting Operator, real-time cloud infrastructure widgets can be the difference between taking 10 minutes to gain state awareness of the service disruption versus hours to days of infrastructure investigation. Read on to learn about how to use widgets and reports for cloud troubleshooting and capacity planning, then watch AppFormix DEMO it in our VFD6 Part 2 Video!
Widgets in computing are defined as applications/components of an interface that enables a user to perform a function or access a service. Take them for granted, sure, but just because widgets are easy enough for children to use does not make them child's play for the serious enterprise cloud operator or for the sleep-deprived developer confounded by application deployment failure. Sometimes, the best solutions are the simplest ones.
By customer demand, AppFormix has added the Widgets feature to our dashboard. This feature enables users to create and customize a widgets dashboard. We have integrated widgets seamlessly with role-based cloud infrastructure analytics. After authenticating with Keystone for OpenStack, or whatever cloud authentication service you use, build and view your optimal dashboard.
For those already using AppFormix, or those who are trying to code up their own widgets, what do we suggest?
1) Evict Host Squatters
You likely already know to look out for 'over achiever users' those applications consuming the most resources in their instances, but what about the under achievers? To achieve goals like increasing cloud ROI, you should hunt down the host squatters - users that spin up larger than necessary instances and promptly ignore them. Releasing horded resources makes a huge difference in your wallet, in both long term and short term savings.
2) Infrastructure Health
State awareness is also vital for capacity planning. In our new Reports feature, we help you do this and offer some predictive analysis so you can prepare your enterprise cloud infrastructure for future demands. Experienced Operators know that the state of your physical cloud assets such as your servers, switches, and cables, are just as user consumption when scaling up an enterprise cloud on a budget. Sure, if your fickle and decrepit servers crash, you can always expedite some more for a 500% markup, but if you want that Christmas bonus, is that really an option? Operators need to catch equipment failure MONTHS before it happens so they can order, rack, cable, and configure replacements.
3) If you have to FIREFIGHT, use a hose not a faucet!
Not all Operations and DevOps deployment firefighting missions are avoidable. If you do have to firefight, make sure you show up with all relevant state data! If your enterprise is new to the cloud and is finally moving from public clouds to hybrid and private clouds, realize that there is an entire shed of behind-the-scenes tooling that public clouds such as AWS use to optimize and plan their capacity. You are going to need similar tooling to look after your own servers. Build out this tooling and keeping it up-to-date and working with all OpenStack distros, KVM or Hyper-V updates, and deployment tools like Ansible and Docker - that is more than a full-time job. Rather than putting your data center at risk by using in-house faucets to trickle water on fires, extinguish them with software solutions that give results immediately.
For those using AppFormix, this is where our Charts View really shines by allowing you to zoom in and out the granularity, and easily go backwards and forwards in the history all while viewing multiple metrics, hosts, and instances at once!
If you are not yet using AppFormix analytics, you should not tolerate trickles of isolated data from your tooling. Use something that allows you not only to find the proverbial haystack needle, but get the real, big picture perspective about what exactly happened!

What it comes down to is that Operators and Developers need the right tools to do their job and get applications and information to customers and business units who need them. If you don't have the proper tooling for your Private or Hybrid cloud, or your tooling doesn't integrate with your OpenStack distribution, try using a software that does - Get a free trial of our seamless AppFormix Analytics Platform.
